Stephen Colbert is a stand-up comedian, writer, actor, and author from the United States, and he also hosts a talk show. His net worth is $75 million. The role that brought him the most notoriety was that of host of “The Colbert Report,” which aired on Comedy Central from 2005 to 2014, and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” which debuted on CBS in 2015 and continues to this day.
Early Life and Career Beginnings
On May 13, 1964, Washington, DC, welcomed Stephen Tyrone Colbert. The youngest of 11 children. After growing up in Bethesda, Maryland, the family moved to James Island, South Carolina. On September 11, 1974, Eastern Air Lines Flight 212 crashed, killing his father, James William Colbert Jr., and brothers Peter and Paul. His mother moved the family to Charleston after the crash.
Colbert performed in several productions at Charleston’s Episcopal Porter-Gaud School. Surgery to treat a perforated eardrum damaged his inner ear, preventing him from studying marine biology. He got deaf in his right ear and could no longer scuba dive. In 1982, he studied philosophy at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. Theater major Colbert graduated from Northwestern University in 1986.
He started improvising with Northwestern’s No Fun Mud Piranhas and Chicago’s Annoyance Theatre. After graduating, he took free improv lessons at Second City in Chicago and answered phones and sold souvenirs. He met Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello after joining Second City’s touring troupe.
After HBO Downtown Productions gave Sedaris and Dinello a TV series, Colbert left Second City for New York. “Exit 57,” a 1995–1996 Comedy Central sketch comedy show, was their collaboration. “The Dana Carvey Show,” “Saturday Night Live,” and “Good Morning America” cast or wrote Colbert. He advised VH1 and MTV scripts.

Through “Good Morning America,” Colbert met “The Daily Show” producer Madeline Smithberg, who hired him on a trial basis in 1997. “Strangers with Candy,” his show with Sedaris and Dinello, was picked up by Comedy Central in 1998, so Colbert took a reduced role on “The Daily Show” to work on it (1999 – 2000). “The Daily Show” correspondent Colbert developed a silly character as he gained notoriety. “The Daily Show” writer, he won three Emmys in 2004, 2005, and 2006.

He considers himself to be a member of the Democratic Party and is devoutly Roman Catholic. In addition to that, he is a minister with the Universal Life Church Monastery where he was ordained.
