Rey Mysterio, a world-renowned luchador, is worth a cool $10 million. Mysterio, or Luis Gutiérrez as he is more often known, is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of professional wrestling. His WWE contract puts him in the SmackDown brand, where he performs. Mysterio began his professional wrestling career in Mexico with the Asistencia Asesora y Administración and later signed with World Championship Wrestling in 1996. He was instrumental in the rise to prominence of the cruiserweight class and the “Lucha Libre” style of wrestling in the United States.
After joining the WCW, Rey went on to win the WCW Cruiserweight Championship five times and the World Tag Team Championship three times. Mysterio joined WWE in 2002 after briefly working for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre. He had equally as much success in WWE, where he won multiple championships. While Rey Mysterio left the WWE in 2015 to compete in Japan and Mexico, he returned to the company in 2018.
Early Life
On December 11, 1974, Luis Gutiérrez entered the world in Chula Vista, California. scar Gutiérrez is the nephew of another wrestler named Rey Mysterio. His son and nephew, in addition to two of his cousins, are also wrestlers.
Career
Luis Gutiérrez began wrestling professionally in Mexico when he was 14 years old. Oscar Gutiérrez became well-known for his “high-flying” wrestling moves after being trained by his uncle, the legendary Rey Mysterio Sr. In 1991, he was officially named “Rey Mysterio Jr.”, after his uncle’s legacy. Rey found his niche in World Championship Wrestling after a year with Extreme Championship Wrestling and a brief run with the AAA in Mexico.
In his first two years with the WCW, he established himself as a top cruiserweight contender by taking on the likes of Dean Malenko, Prince Iuakea, and Lord Steven Regal. During this time, Mysterio’s conflict with the New World Order also gained him notoriety. In 1998, he defeated Juventud to win his third cruiserweight title. After that, he needed six months of recovery time after undergoing knee surgery.
The World Championship Wrestling (WCW) ordered Mysterio to remove his mask in 1999. In retrospect, he claims he was coerced by the WCW into unmasking himself against his will. Oscar Gutiérrez said it was harmful to his family since it broke with the customs of Mexico’s Lucha Libre form of fighting. Mysterio also complained that he was unmasked in the middle of a “throwaway match,” rather than as the dramatic end to something. Further, he disclosed that he had been told he may “remove his disguise or lose his job.”
Mysterio became known as a “giant killer” throughout the subsequent years because to his success over larger competitors like Kevin Nash and Scott Norton. The WCW production team preferred more traditional wrestling shows to the cruiserweight class, despite Rey’s rising stardom. Mysterio was never told he could be a “main eventer” in the WCW and it was never implied. Rey Mysterio teamed up with the No Limit Soldiers and then the Filthy Animals between 1999 and 2001.
Rey Mysterio went back to the independent circuit in Mexico and the United States after the WCW folded. After signing with WWE in 2002, he was finally able to resume wearing his mask. Before becoming World Heavyweight Champion, he engaged in a feud with Eddie Guerrero. Prior to his alliance with Sin Cara, he had already amassed a lot of individual championships. His WWE run ended in 2013, and he never returned. After fighting in Japan for the AAA, Mysterio eventually made his way back to WWE in 2018.
Personal Life
Over the course of their marriage, Gutierrez and his wife Angie have produced two children. The members of the family all adhere to the Roman Catholic faith.
Rey Mysterio’s career has been marked by several high-profile scandals. Multiple WWE wrestlers were implicated in an article published by “Sports Illustrated” in 2007 that suggested the use of anabolic steroids and human growth hormone. The name Gutierrez came up in conversation as one of the wrestlers mentioned. Mysterio was suspended for 30 days by the WWE as a result, but he maintained his innocence by saying he had obtained the medication legally from a doctor’s prescription. Clearly, Rey didn’t learn his lesson from his first suspension, as the WWE suspended him again in 2012 for the same offense.
The killing of Perro Aguayo Jr. is likely the most horrific controversy in which Rey has been involved. During a match between Extreme Tiger, Mysterio, and Manik, the wrestler passed away inside the ring. Because of Mysterio’s devastating dropkick, Aguayo was knocked out. Aguayo’s death went unnoticed since everyone thought he’d only been knocked out. It was soon realized that Aguayo had stopped breathing, therefore he was transported to the hospital where CPR was attempted. Unfortunately, all of these attempts were in vain, and he was officially declared dead on March 21st, 2015.
Mysterio is rumored to own a $1 million mansion in the city of Chula Vista, California. The home was constructed in 2004, and it has a total area of around 4,000 square feet. It has a lot of unique features and a total of five bedrooms. Rey’s enormous tropical fish collection is kept in a large fish tank. He also has an extensive action figure collection and a significant number of swords and other blades.
