Peter Gregory Obi is an accomplished politician and businessman. He served as the governor of Anambra State for two terms. He was impeached in November 2006 during his first tenure as Governor, but was reinstated in February 2007. He served as the Chairman of the Nigeria Security and Excahange Commission and was the youngest chairman of Fidelity Bank Plc.

“OKWUTE,” which means “ROCK,” is Peter Obi’s nickname. Onitsha, Nigeria, is where he was born on July 19, 1961. Christ the King College, Onitsha, was where he received his secondary education. Peter graduated with a B.A (Hons) in Philosophy from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1984.

.Afterwards, his love for academic took him outside the shore of Nigeria to Ivy league and Oxbridge schools. He is an alumna of Harvard Business School, Boston, USA; London School of Economics where he studied Financial Management/Business Policy; Columbia Business School, New York, USA (Marketing Management); Institute for Management and Development, Switzerland; Kellogg Graduate School of Management, USA, Oxford University and Cambridge.

Obi and Margaret Brownson Usen married in 1992 and have two children, Gabriella Nwamaka Frances Obi and Gregory Peter Oseloka Obi.

Peter Obi Biography: Political Career

Peter campaigned for governor of Anambra State in 2003 on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) proclaimed his opponent, Chris Ngige of the People’s Democratic Party, the winner at the end of the election.

For over three years, Peter Obi fought the decision in court. Ngige’s win was eventually reversed by the court of appeals on March 15, 2006. On March 17, 2006, Obi took over. The state house of assembly impeached him after seven months in office, replacing him with Virginia Etiaba, his deputy. Virginia Etiaba became Nigeria’s first female governor as a result of the incident.

Peter Obi, on the other hand, was not content with the existing quo. He successfully appealed his impeachment to the court of appeals. He was re-instated as Governor on February 9, 2007, and Victoria Etiaba relinquished authority to him.

After Andy Uba’s victory in the general elections on May 29, 2007, Peter Obi resigned as governor. Obi, as a determined elite, contested the court’s decision. He claimed that he did not finish his four-year term and that his term began when he was elected in March 2006.

After serving his first term, Peter Obi ran for governor again in 2010 and won. Professor Charles Soludo, the previous governor of the Central Bank of the Philippines, was his opponent. He stayed on as governor of Anambra for another four years before handing over to Willie Obiano in 2014 after his second tenure expired.

On October 12, 2018, Peter Obi was appointed the PDP’s presidential contender Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the 2019 presidential elections. They were defeated by the current President, Muhammadu Buhari.
